January Cottage Corner

January Cottage Corner

I have been seeking a peaceful corner for my eyes to rest upon, and I have created it in the cottage corner. I have been surprised this year that I have learned how to keep a poinsettia alive. I have would normally have killed the plant by now.

January Cottage Corner
I have lit this area with natural light and candles. Indoor lighting can be so harsh.

January Cottage Corner
I changed the dishes out in the cupboard to the blue willow pattern. These dishes all came from my mother. I only had a gravy boat I found at a thrift store, and she had found most of these and collected them. Giving the cottage corner a cozy feel for January.
Do you change things up for the season?

Understated Holiday

 Understated Holiday Cottage
I am going very understated here for my embellishments for the season.

Understated Holiday Cottage
I have always preferred to forage my decorations in December.

Understated Holiday Cottage
This centerpiece is comprised of two juniper sprigs, a blue ribbon, two tealights, a dough bowl, and a bag of pinecones I just got on clearance at Hobby Lobby for $1.

Understated Holiday Cottage
I just made the table runner too, with a yard and a half of fabric from Hobby Lobby also.

No electric lights, just tea lights. Simple, understated, and nostalgic is the look I have created here in the cottage corner. The pine smells really good. I just cut it today. Breathe deep and breathe in, and have faith.

A Pretty Autumn Table

A Pretty Autumn Table
A table just for fun and inspiration at this time of year.

A Pretty Autumn Table
I had it in mind to create this centerpiece before the cold got the roses, the hydrangeas, and the ferns.

A Pretty Autumn Table
It just so happens that my roses go with my hydrangeas at this time of the year. The hydrangeas morph in color in the autumn.

A Pretty Autumn Table
The muted colors also work well with an assortment of transferware for the romantic autumn table.

A Pretty Autumn Table
I didn't plan on creating an entire table setup. I just had fun creating a pretty picture.

The garden has lasted about a month longer than usual. It has yet to freeze around the house. So I couldn't let all of these flowers go to waste.

Enjoy the season. Enjoy every day.

Filled With the Spirit

Ephesians 5 : Filled with the Spirit: The Charm of Home

15 So be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise. 16 Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days. 17 Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do.18 Don’t be drunk with wine, because that will ruin your life. Instead, be filled with the Holy Spirit, 19 singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, and making music to the Lord in your hearts.20 And give thanks for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Ephesians 5:15-20

When you live by the Spirit's power you are filled with the Holy Spirit and you will live by God's will not your own.

All glory and honor to my Lord Jesus Christ,
Sherry

God Keeps His Promises

Matthew 6: God Keeps His Promises: The Charm of Home

19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
22 “The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy,[c] your whole body will be full of light. 23 But if your eyes are unhealthy,[d] your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!
24 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.

Do Not Worry

25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life[e]?
28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
Matthew 6:19-34
The Lord will provide for His followers. Don't be doubting that you will have what you need. It will be given to you. The Lord keeps His promises.
Understand, therefore, that the Lord your God is indeed God. He is the faithful God who keeps his covenant for a thousand generations and lavishes his unfailing love on those who love him and obey his commands.
Deuteronomy 7:9

Making Blackberry Syrup

Ball International Can-It Forward Day

It is time for Ball's 6th International Can-It Forward Day!  I am participating this year.  They so kindly supplied me with these blue glass mason jars and a copy of The All New Ball Book of Canning and Preserving.

Making Blackberry Syrup: The Charm of Home
I took my blackberry harvest and made Blackberry Syrup.

Making Blackberry Syrup: The Charm of Home
The recipe was right out their new cookbook!  It was an instant winner for the family!  Waffles are always welcome and the children loved them with the blackberry syrup.

Making Blackberry Syrup: The Charm of Home
Blackberry Syrup
Ingredients:

3 lb. (1.5 kg) blackberries
2 cups (500 ml) water
Cheesecloth
2 3/4 cups (675 ml) sugar
1/4 cup (60 ml) light corn syrup
2 Tbsp. (30 ml) bottled lemon juice
  1. Place blackberries and water in a 6-qt. (6-L) stainless steel or enameled Dutch oven.  Bring to a simmer over medium-low heat.  Cook, uncovered, 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. (Do not boil.)
  2. Remove from heat. Line a wire mesh strainer with 2 layers of dampened cheesecloth or a jelly bag.  Place over a bowl.  Pour berry mixture into strainer, and let drain 2 hours or as needed to extract 4 1/2 cups (1.13 L) juice. (Do not press or squeeze mixture.) Discard solids.  Rinse Dutch oven.
  3. Combine blackberry juice, sugar, and next 2 ingredients in Dutch oven, stirring until sugar dissolves.  Bring mixture to a full rolling boil over medium-high heat; boil 1 minute.
  4. Ladle hot syrup into a hot jar, leaving 1/2-inch (1-cm) headspace.  Remove air bubbles.  Wipe jar rim.  Center lid on jar.  Apply band, and adjust to finger-tip tight.  Place jar in boiling-water canner.  Repeat until all jars are filled.
  5. Process jars 10 minutes, adjusting for altitude.  Turn off heat; remove lid, and let jars stand 5 minutes. Remove jars and cool.
Makes: about 3 (1-pint/500-ml) jars
Recipe from: The All New Ball Book of Canning and Preserving
The recipe was wonderful; pleasing me with 3 of these beautiful blue jars full of blackberry syrup!

Making Blackberry Syrup: The Charm of Home
The blue mason jars are another new favorite of mine!  They have a wide mouth and are easy to wash.  The blue glass makes them oh, so, pretty to look at on the table.

The All New Ball Book of Canning and Preserving
The recipe book is full of over 350 of the best canned, pickled, and preserved recipes.  This year's copy had chapters on fermenting, dehydrating, curing, and smoking.  I found those especially interesting because I was going to get the dehydrator out and try some vegetables in it anyway, so now I have this to turn to.
Thank you to Ball for sponsoring the Can-It Forward Day by supplying me with the canning jars and the cookbook.

Home Sweet Home #220

Hello and welcome to Home Sweet Home!  This week I took tea outside and remembered how much I love it in Nature Lover.

The strawberries are in season so I had to make this Buttermilk Strawberry Bundt Cake.

There are so many great ideas, great decorating, and delicious recipes at the Home Sweet Home Party each week.   You all had a lot of great post!  Here are a few that caught my eye.

Alexandra at Prairie Charm shared this Maileg Bunny House. Her husband and her have built this for their four year old daughter's birthday.  I really liked this because I played with something like this when I was little.

Nicole at Early Bird Farm shared Camp Cooking *Bread. Looks wonderful doesn't it?  She makes it look easy!

Melissa at Dancing Dog Cabin shared a fabulous Mother's Day Tea Inspiration.

Jolena at While I Linger shared Springtime Motivation.  I loved this wheelbarrow.

I had on several occasions wanted to feature some of your entries but, you don't create a link back to the Home Sweet Home party.  So, please include that link so I can feature you too!
I am really lucky to have all of your amazing posts because, it is you who make the Home Sweet Home party so special!  You are all so talented and share such wonderful posts!  It is really hard to feature a few and, remember to be featured you must have a link back to the Home Sweet Home party.   Thank you to everyone who joins me at Home Sweet Home!  It is wonderful to have you here!
