The Otherworldly Season of Spring

There is an ethereal quality about spring that makes it otherworldly. The way everything turns so green when the spring rains and warmth come.

This plant makes me think of the fae-like qualities of spring the most. Every spring when I pass it, I tell myself to take a picture. It won't last long, and it is so beautiful. I am always looking at it and bending over to see the blossoms that hang off it like little bells. It is called Sicilian Honey Garlic. I got it as a free bulb that came with a Dutch bulb order I made years ago. It has been one of my favorite spring bulbs.

The colors that explode in spring are so welcome after winter and look so good with the green foliage; everything blooming new and not sun-scorched yet.

The spring rains. Every bud and blossom dripping with rain looks so much prettier. I ignore the drooping plants and appreciate the rain when it comes.

The herbs all bloom in spring, and here the catmint looks like it is a fairytale setting for my frog.

The hostas are now so lush and beautiful in this corner of the yard. I have tried to shade them from the summer sun, but to no avail. They will not look as wonderful as they do now for the rest of the year. So now is the time to enjoy this spot in the garden.

The Veronica looks like a royal scepter growing in abundance, waiting for the bees to come and partake. 

The colors on this rose that change as the bloom matures and even glows in the evening during the blue hour. I also don't forget to smell this rose with it's fruity scent it is heavenly.

The texture of lamb's ear which makes you stop and take a second look as you wander by, desiring to reach out and touch it.

The bearded iris that also has an element of texture, not to mention the flamboyant display of the blossom itself.

The happy dance of violas above their pot, as if they were aiming to please. 

The clematis that has bloomed in the daylilies, It has a  star shaped bloom peaking out of the foliage because the wind keeps it from ever climbing the mailbox post.

The angle of the sun in the sky in spring (and again in Autumn) makes for the most delightful shadows along the fence. 

The dappled sunlight on the garden with that spring sun is also visually interesting.

So these are the things I enjoy and try to look for in my daily garden walk. The cares of the world fade away when you have eyes to see what the creator has in store for you.

A Potting Shed

With hundreds of seedlings needing transplanting, I decided to remodel a shed and turn it into a potting shed. It was an underused space in my garden, and I really needed to get out of the kitchen repotting and starting seeds, so this was a perfect solution.

It was a really basic and ugly shed, but with a coat of white paint and a rearrangement of the shelving, I was surprised how my ugly duckling progressed.

I am pleasantly surprised how it is turning out. This side is just about like I wanted it, but I am still working on the other side. This is the rustic potting table and flower-arranging spot.  

There is even room for the bistro to stay out and be styled. Here I have my white lilacs, which look lavender when they open, in a vintage ironstone pitcher.

I used it for the first time this past weekend and stayed out there repotting summer plants for hours, and it is awesome!

Spring Mini Bouquet

I love mini bouquets. I plucked these flowers and made this in a hurry.

There is much gardening going on now.

Spring Signs in the Garden

 

I took a turn about the garden and found a few things were blooming. I was eager for blooms, so I enjoyed these daffodils first.

I haven't ever had any daffodils in this combination, so I was thrilled to find them.

The red-veined sorrel is up, and I think it is a beautiful plant! It can also go in salad or be made into sorrel soup.

I cleaned some spent flowers out of these pots and I placed homemade wire cloches over them to keep the animals out. I show how I made these here.

New tulips to me; I can't wait to see these bloom! 

This crocus has been in my garden for years.

And much to my delight, after a stroll through the garden I had enough daffodils for a bouquet!

Spring Flower Arrangements

Last year I made several spring flower arrangements. I have never done that before, but it was a fun hobby to pass the time with a cold spring. I won't be making that many this year, but I thought it would be fun to put them all in one post for this year and revisit them.

Pansies are a favorite! 

We had a storm, and some redbud branches ended up in our street, and I used them in this arrangement.

Oxalis is new to me for using in flower arrangements, but I love the way they look.

Fuchsia was also new plant to me, and it looked spectacular when it bloomed. 

The main plant here was the bocopa plant. It trailed out of the container and was gorgeous but didn't survive the heat of our summers that well.

It is about time to start seeds. So many dreams about the garden, but it will all unfold in time.

Cathedral Bells Rose

 

I have new roses this year, and this one is doing well. It is the Cathedral Bells rose. 

It has cup-shaped blossoms and a nice scent. The pink rose tends to look shabby and romantic. 

The edges of the petals are getting a little brown, and it is probably due to the cool, wet weather. I nurse the roses along, just like other crops. Some years the weather favors a plant, and some years not so much. Either way, the romantic blooms are very enjoyable.

Picking the Rhubarb

There is a rooster on the next road over crowing all hours of the day.

 There is a smell of honeysuckle in a gentle breeze. 

I am out this Saturday evening picking the rhubarb. You know what this means? There will be pie soon!

Spring Pansies, Violas, and Oxalis

 
I made one more mini garden this spring, and it was pansies, violas, and oxalis. Some of you may recognize oxalis and think, isn't that a weed? It is, and it is growing in my yard right now in green.

The purple and yellow in the violas and pansies go well together. 

The oxalis, however, also has a purple hue with a yellow bloom. This is not the variety that grows in my yard; this one was from the garden center. They have some really pretty oxalis with variegated leaves, but this was the only one I could find in my area. The color goes with the goth gardening trend toward darker colors. 

It was incredibly hard to find any pansies with pink in them. They had some at a local nursery, but they sold out right away. This pale purple was as close as I could get to pink. 

No matter, sometimes the simplest flowers can make a really great impact when you group them with other plants. I was arranging the little baker's rack in the garden and playing around.
