David's Mercy

David's Mercy: The Charm of Home
David and Saul by Julius Kronberg

God is angered when Saul, Israel's king, unlawfully offers a sacrifice (1 Samuel 13:8-14) and later defied a divine instruction to not only kill all of the Amalekites, but to destroy also their confiscated property.(1 Samuel 15:1-28) Consequently, he sends the prophet Samuel to anoint David, the youngest son of Jesse of Bethlehem, to be king instead. (1 Samuel 16:1-13)
King Saul became jealous of David's reputation. God allowed an evil spirit to enter into Saul (1 Samuel 18:10) and this tested David as much as Saul. King Saul realized the Lord was with David (1 Samuel 18:12) and Saul eventually tried to hunt and kill David. David escaped into the wilderness (1 Samuel 23:14) and finally was handed Saul by God and the result is the story of how David responded.

David Spares Saul’s Life

After Saul returned from fighting the Philistines, he was told that David had gone into the wilderness of En-gedi. So Saul chose 3,000 elite troops from all Israel and went to search for David and his men near the rocks of the wild goats.
At the place where the road passes some sheepfolds, Saul went into a cave to relieve himself. But as it happened, David and his men were hiding farther back in that very cave!
“Now’s your opportunity!” David’s men whispered to him. “Today the Lord is telling you, ‘I will certainly put your enemy into your power, to do with as you wish.’” So David crept forward and cut off a piece of the hem of Saul’s robe.
But then David’s conscience began bothering him because he had cut Saul’s robe. He said to his men, “The Lord forbid that I should do this to my lord the king. I shouldn’t attack the Lord’s anointed one, for the Lord himself has chosen him.” So David restrained his men and did not let them kill Saul.

Everyone must submit to governing authorities. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God. So anyone who rebels against authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and they will be punished.

Romans 13:1-2

So you must submit to them, not only to avoid punishment, but also to keep a clear conscience.

Romans 13:5
After Saul had left the cave and gone on his way, David came out and shouted after him, “My lord the king!” And when Saul looked around, David bowed low before him.
Then he shouted to Saul, “Why do you listen to the people who say I am trying to harm you? 10 This very day you can see with your own eyes it isn’t true. For the Lord placed you at my mercy back there in the cave. Some of my men told me to kill you, but I spared you. For I said, ‘I will never harm the king—he is the Lord’s anointed one.’ 11 Look, my father, at what I have in my hand. It is a piece of the hem of your robe! I cut it off, but I didn’t kill you. This proves that I am not trying to harm you and that I have not sinned against you, even though you have been hunting for me to kill me.
12 “May the Lord judge between us. Perhaps the Lord will punish you for what you are trying to do to me, but I will never harm you. 13 As that old proverb says, ‘From evil people come evil deeds.’ So you can be sure I will never harm you. 14 Who is the king of Israel trying to catch anyway? Should he spend his time chasing one who is as worthless as a dead dog or a single flea? 15 May the Lord therefore judge which of us is right and punish the guilty one. He is my advocate, and he will rescue me from your power!”
16 When David had finished speaking, Saul called back, “Is that really you, my son David?” Then he began to cry. 17 And he said to David, “You are a better man than I am, for you have repaid me good for evil.

Don't repay evil for evil. Don't retaliate with insults when people insult you. Instead, pay them back with a blessing. That is what God has called you to do, and he will bless you for it.

1 Peter 3:9

18 Yes, you have been amazingly kind to me today, for when the Lord put me in a place where you could have killed me, you didn’t do it. 19 Who else would let his enemy get away when he had him in his power?

The Lord said to my Lord,
“Sit in the place of honor at my right hand
until I humble your enemies,
making them a footstool under your feet.”

Psalm 110:1

May the Lord reward you well for the kindness you have shown me today. 20 And now I realize that you are surely going to be king, and that the kingdom of Israel will flourish under your rule. 21 Now swear to me by the Lord that when that happens you will not kill my family and destroy my line of descendants!”
22 So David promised this to Saul with an oath. Then Saul went home, but David and his men went back to their stronghold.
1 Samuel 24

David shows unbelieveable mercy to King Saul who had turned against him and became an enemy. David was a servant of the Lord and God blessed David for his faithfulness and anointed him King of Israel.

David's Psalms are wonderful prayers to pray to God if you are under the attack from enemies or you need to grow in your faith.

David's Psalm for the cave experience:
I cry out to the Lord;
I plead for the Lord’s mercy.
I pour out my complaints before him
and tell him all my troubles.
When I am overwhelmed,
you alone know the way I should turn.
Wherever I go,
my enemies have set traps for me.
I look for someone to come and help me,
but no one gives me a passing thought!
No one will help me;
no one cares a bit what happens to me.
Then I pray to you, O Lord.
I say, “You are my place of refuge.
You are all I really want in life.
Hear my cry,
    for I am very low.
Rescue me from my persecutors,
for they are too strong for me.
Bring me out of prison
    so I can thank you.
The godly will crowd around me,
for you are good to me.”
Psalm 142

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.
Psalm 23
David had a relationship with God and human nonetheless, he exhibited and example for us all.

One of the major lessons for me when I revisit this story and re-read it is, that if we chose not to follow God, He allows the evil spirits to come in and test our faith. When we are found lacking and the more we chose an alternative path the less likely we are to ever have eternity with God. This is a HUGE takeaway and it as real as the floor you get out of bed and hit every morning. Are you ready to pray to God and rectify this... if you are not following Him?

Sherry, you share some interesting thoughts. The one I had never thought of before is how the evil spirit sent to Saul also tested David. Wow. I guess we still see similar things today. When someone we care about makes poor choices that impact us, we have to choose how we are going to respond, don't we? We can draw in close to Jesus or we can let those choices sway us one way and then the other until we are frustrated, hurt, and drifting away from God.
