Shorter Days

Every year at this time, I feel a sense of nostalgia for fall and all the memories it brings. Cozy warm sweaters, a crackling fire, and gorgeous leaves on the maple trees. I could never really put my finger on exactly why this always happens to me at the end of July and the beginning of August. This year, it hit me that the days have just started to get shorter. Duh! Why have I never figured this out? 

 

It also seems incredibly ironic that this is when the sunflowers bloom. Do you notice little things like this? I have always been in tune with these natural patterns, but somehow I never connected them with the days getting shorter. 

So, I lit the oil lamp and made a bouquet of sunflowers in my cottage corner. I relished the sun going down sooner and the atmosphere feeling cozier. Fall has always been my favorite season. So now I know it's on its way.

Wildflower Bouquet

It is now August, and I always love to have a wildflower bouquet at this time of the year. All of these things usually grow as native plants here, except the cosmos and tansy.  The sunflower was a volunteer plant. 

I love wildflowers in my cottage looking corner!

More Bouquets from the Cottage Garden

 
So many flowers are coming out of the garden, and just so many hours in the day. This is a volunteer sunflower. I don't know what variety this sunflower is. It reminds me of Teddy Bear Sunflower, but it is seven feet tall.

Do you like my cottage-style stoneware pitcher? I found this at a thrift store this spring and waited till it went half price. I love the blackberries on the front of it.  

This zinnia bouquet is in sorbet colors, but I just collected them and created the color combination from a picture I saw on Instagram. The colors are lavender, bright coral, light coral, Queen Lime, and some Hyssop. 

It is going to rain, so I brought these inside to enjoy, but sometimes I put the bouquets outside on the outdoor furniture to enjoy. 

Cottage Garden: Sunflower Bouquet

 

At the end of July, I am always ready for a touch of fall. When the sunflowers bloom, they provide exactly what I need in the garden.

My sunflower bouquet with a stalk of Rosemary is so pretty with the fall colors in this teacup. 

I am not sure what sunflower varieties these are, but they are so welcome with this cup of tea. I love bringing the outdoors in with bouquets. Do you grow any flowers for your table?

Garden Picnic Tea

Today it is time to get outside again and have a pretend picnic.  I am working in the garden and it was a perfect spot to set my picnic basket.

Just behind the picnic basket is the broccoli.  That looks like I will be picking it this week.

The picnic basket is filled with the spring and summer Brambly Hedge china and a lace table runner from Heritage Lace.

I found a book on the shelf for the picture and a pressed fall leaf fell out of it.  I am know to stick plant life in books and forget that it is there.

I normally grow the cut and come again zinnias but this year I tried this low bush variety and they are really pretty.  They have been providing non-stop blooms for the whole season.

I am so happy with my snapdragons.  I grew them from seed. They are just starting to bloom. 

One of the sunflowers opened up this week too.  These sunflowers have blooms all down the stalk.  I haven't ever grown any like this before. 

Have you been in the garden lately?  I can't believe it is August already!  That fall leaf is a reminder to start planning for the change of seasons.

Home Sweet Home #29

Welcome to Home Sweet Home!  I have my table ready for dessert and coffee with a little coastal style.

The original inspiration for this table was a table I saw in Waterside Cottages a book by Barbara Jacksier.  I live a mile or less from  a large lake.  I am glad I'm not waterside though, I grew up with areas of water nearby and there were too many snakes!  
My vintage item is the pewter, all of it by Wilton Armetale.
