Garden Life

I am taking things slower in this season of life. I don't rush anymore. I enjoy the seasons when they get here. I had these garden items on my buffet for a week or so, and I kept walking by them and had been thinking they would make a great photo.  

I paused to enjoy my creation with a little mug of tea, and I believe this is Benjamin Bunny.

Oh, and yes, here is Peter! Into mischief, no doubt. 

Tranquility, let us find some of that. 

Where do you find this tranquility? Well, it is in the garden waiting for you. 

Eluding life in the garden is a peaceful habit.

Fall Garden Refresh

 
I have been working on a fall refresh in the garden. Much of the summer flowers that have peaked are on their way out, but it can still be pretty.

Of course I have been adding some mums for fall color. I really appreciate these blooms late in the summer garden. 

I have some "new" to me French-style furniture that I have repainted and is ready for some fall displays. The color of this planter when I found it was rust. I spray-painted the whole thing white.

I just planted and watered that mum; that is why there is a wet patio there.

This vine survived the summer and looks amazing. It is even blooming. I am not sure what it is. I can't recall what I bought; I just liked the color. I am a very visual organizer.

The flowers that love the heat are still going strong and gorgeous! 

I have been growing the Queen Lime zinnias for a few years now, and they are a favorite in the garden.

It is important to note that I do not garden for perfection; I garden for habitat over perfectly deadheaded flowers. The zinnia and the sunflowers are food for the goldfinches and other songbirds, and I will leave them in place for the birds and pull them at the very end of the season.

Junk in the Garden

I have a few vintage things I pulled out to show you how I use them in the garden. I use all my vintage items, even when cooking. 

This is true junk. This was a "thrown away" flower bucket from my husband's workplace, and he saw it and salvaged it for me. Perfect for my peony bouquet.

Here on my potting table, I have an old Coke crate, and it houses string or tools. The old tool box was from a grandfather; perfect carryall for my herb pots.

Old silverware-knives in particular-is a handy tool when gardening. I use them to pop difficult seedlings out of cell packs.

The old, long-handled wooden spoon was sent to the garden years ago to mix fertilizer and it has been there ever since.

This vintage enamelware coffee pot is perfect for mixing compost tea to fertilize seedlings. On the inside, the spout has a strainer, which catches any debris and makes a liquid of the compost.

This crown just looks old, but it has the perfect rusty look to go with this little potted ivy.

Do you use junk in your garden? My style goes from the house to the garden each year when I find new uses for things.

Late June Cottage Tea

 
It is late June, and I can now take breaks from the planting in the garden and enjoy some of my labor by baking blueberry muffins. 

All of the flowers in the garden are now starting to bloom. I will soon have lots of mini bouquets!

The Fall Hunt

Let's cozy up with the brown betty teapot and have some cranberry bread and hear the men tell of their adventures on the fall hunt shall we? 

Seriously, all of my life I have lived in a region where this time of year only means one thing...look out for these poor deer bounding across the road because our men are out flushing them out of the woods! 

This is a vintage paint by number painting I picked up at a local antique store.  I have always loved the colors in it.

Do drive carefully if you live in deer country.  We have a huge amount of wild turkey here too, maybe someone will catch Thanksgiving dinner.  Teacup made by Grace's Teaware.

Summery Tea

Today's tea is light and lemony due to this delicious Cream Cheese Lemonade Pie. 

Do you ever see a recipe and you can't stop thinking about it till you've tried it.  Maybe other people don't do that, but I do. This pie was one of those recipes.  

I saw this recipe on Pinterest and it just keep popping up until I made it.  It was a winner of a recipe!  I would really like to try it with key lime flavors.  

The tea set is Coaching Scenes by Johnson Brothers and the starfish table runner was provided by Heritage Lace.

Vintage Buttermilk Pineapple Sherbet Recipe

Today I am sharing this vintage recipe with you.  This came out of a recipe book from a Florida church that my grandmother gave to my Mother.  It is called simply Buttermilk Sherbet. The best part is no churn and 3 ingredients!  This is my favorite kind of summer recipe.

Buttermilk Sherbet

Ingredients:

2 cups buttermilk

1 small can (8 oz.) crushed pineapple

1/2 granulated sugar

Mix and dissolve sugar thoroughly.  Freeze, stirring occasionally.  I just stirred it once and it came out really well.

You have to let it thaw a little to scoop it, but it scooped out nice too.

The lime sherbet I made also and I made it with a frozen Limeade concentrated mix.  I added a cup of that instead of the cup of pineapple and it came out more like ice milk and it was very hard to scoop.  It was just too much like a block of ice.  So, I think you could make other flavors of this, just use the fruit pulp crushed with the juice to equal a cup and it should freeze as nice as the pineapple did.

In the Garden...

Happy Memorial Day here in the states!  I have been in the garden a lot for the last two weeks.  It finally stopped raining here.  You can see my white begonia has yellow leaves and and is looking a little wonky. I am giving it a chance though, I think it will come out of it's altered state.

I am loving my hidden garden path behind my one flower bed.   I paused here with my cup of tea for a picture.

My little teacup is by Johnson Brothers and the pattern is "Strawberry Fair," so fitting since it is strawberry season.  Have you been gardening?  I love to finally get outside everyday and use the back yard like an outdoor room to my house.  This year I am taking companion planting to a whole new level.  I will share some pictures if it turns out like I am picturing.  I can't wait to see it grow.  Have a wonderful start to your summer season!
