Comforting Home

Comforting Home: The Charm of Home
When the season changes to fall I am always ready for the comfort of home. A cozy cup of tea and a delicious dessert to go with it.  For me home should be comforting in all of its' aspects.  I want it to look, smell, feel, sound, and taste comforting. (The teacup is by Old Amsterdam Porcelain Works.)

Coventry Lace Panel: The Charm of Home
That led me to come up with the idea of cooling my pie today on the windowsill.  Does anybody do this anymore?  It is such an iconic comforting image!  The lace curtain I have pictured here today is just gorgeous!  It is the Coventry Panel with a lace ring trim by Heritage Lace.

Coventry Lace Panel: The Charm of Home
These lace window panels have the most homey vibe.  They are very gauzy and remind me of a beautifully woven Victorian lace.  They are very much like the lace that hung in the windows when many home cooks did cool their pies in the window.  I especially liked the lace ring trim at the top that the panels hang by.

Do you like to create a cozy home?  What comforting things do you like to do for fall?

Thank you very much to Heritage Lace for sponsoring today's tea.  The products described were provided to The Charm of Home for this post.  The written description was entirely my own.

The Humble Angel Food Cake Embellished

The Victoria Sponge cake wasn't happening for me last week but I really wasn't ready to give up on it so, I embellished a angel food cake from the grocery store with berries and cream.

It is really very similar to the Victoria Sponge in construction but, I am sure the cake tastes a bit different.  So to create this I just used a store-bought angel food cake and cut it in half horizontally.  I spread berry jam on the first layer (I used raspberry) and then I spread the cream cheese and whip cream icing, recipe follows.  I layered the top of the cream icing with flat sliced strawberries.  Then I placed the top layer of the angel food cake on that and covered it with the icing and placed berries, strawberry buds and leaves, mint, and violets. Everything that went on the cake is edible (and organic).

It is a really pretty cake it even slices up pretty.  So it's easy and fun to make.  No one really wanted to eat the leaves they just removed them.  My family (all guys) tells me I am feeding them "twigs and berries" again.  It is all about the visual, and yes the guys do get that....surprisingly.   I thought the key to it looking right in the pictures was the icing.  So I searched the Pinterest boards for awhile to come up with the right icing.

Cream Cheese and Whip Cream Icing

Ingredients:
8 ounces of cream cheese, room temperature
1 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
1 cup sugar
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

In a medium bowl beat whipping cream with a electric mixer till stiff peaks form; sit aside.
In a large bowl combine the cream cheese, sugar, salt and vanilla.  Beat until smooth and then fold into the whipping cream.
Yields enough to ice an entire 8-10 inch round cake  (I could have halved the recipe for this cake.)

Enjoy!

Home Sweet Home #54

Hello and Welcome to Home Sweet Home!  I found this vintage pair of baby shoes at the thrift store a few weeks ago and I knew I would like to try making a vignette with them.  My idea was to copycat Rene from Miss Gracie's House.

I reminisce every time I visit Rene at her blog because of her house and style.  It takes me back to a farmhouse I grew up playing in.  This is me around by the back porch.  This was a gracious Victorian farmhouse  that was my playhouse!  Yes, it sat right beside our home and we used this house for storage and I played in it.  It wasn't restored like Rene's though, it was torn down, but it made a great playhouse!

Anyway, Rene has a style that is all her own.  It is vintage farmhouse, shabby chic, and Victorian all mingled together.  I love to see the vignettes she comes up with and today I thought I would give a go at copying her style.

Thanks for indulging me in this trip down memory lane.  It is funny all the things that go together to create a style to someone's work.  I found these little baby shoes for only a $1.

Now, I would like to feature some posts that got my attention from last week's Home Sweet Home!
Kathy at A Delightsome Life  created some adorable guest bags for her bedroom out of a child's dress.

Debbie at Confessions of a Plate Addict created this cute vignette with some French ticking and toile hearts.

Becca at From Gardners 2 Bergers had a tutorial on how to recreate these framed maps as art.  Her post includes several printable maps to use also!

A Toile Tale  showed off her gorgeous master bathroom makeover with imported French cupboards.
Thank you to all who join me at Home Sweet Home!   It is wonderful to have you here!

Vintage Millinery Flowers

I scored at the Salvation Army the other day.  Four bags of vintage millinery flowers for 25 cents a piece!  I had been looking for white flowers for a project and these have that perfect antique white hue to them due to their age.  They were in their original package unopened.

I had in my mind this hat, that I wanted to take the red flowers off of.  I wanted to use lace and I was waiting for the right thing to come along to use for it's makeover.

I like the rose on this lace scarf.  The scarf is a little too long but, it does look romantic;

.....or, maybe a vintage cameo.  I like them both, very romantic.  It reminds me a lot of  'A Room with a View.'   Does anyone remember that movie?

Mourning Cameo

I am going to join The French Cupboard for Vintage Black Friday.   This cameo is a mourning cameo.  Mourning jewelry was worn in remembrance of a lost loved one and was very common in the 19th century.  Queen Victoria brought the practice of wearing mourning jewelry to a very fashionable height.  After the death of Prince Albert, she stayed in permanent mourning until she died forty years later.  The cameo is made from fossilized coal called jet.  (Source: Antique Trader)

And of course I can't just show you the cameo, so I made a vignette.

How do you like the cloche?  I found this today at the thrift store.  It isn't old but, I thought it would be great with this post.  I found this silver brush recently too.  The silver sugar hasn't got a lid but it makes a great vase.

Go and visit The French Cupboard  for more vintage black finds.
And also, Silver Sunday at Gypsy Fish Journal for silver treasures.
