I have tried to capture cottage style in my house for a long time. But; having been raised with a family of antique lovers, refinishing furniture was the method of choice not painting. Here my dining chair sits with my first can of chalk paint and I am going to take the leap. I am going to paint the chairs to try to get more of a cottage look in that room.
Forty minutes later, I am blown away! This is cottage. I like these chairs so much better than I did with that oak finish. I'm still thinking about the seats. I may just slipcover a little flirty seat cover. What do you think? Is it cottage?

To me cottage style is merely what whispers COMFORT and Makes you SMILE! Your chair was beautiful EITHER way. I do like the new white paint AND the seat is very pretty and looks like it doesn't NEED to be redone. I think the slipcover is a "PERFECT IDEA"!!! LOVE IT! Do promise us a picture!
Have a wonderful week,

Donna
Very nice, a little paint can do miracle.

It looks great! I just posted a picture of similar chairs I am redoing. Yours looks very cottage like! I am going in the Country French or Swedish direction with mine. These chairs are great solid foundations to start with!
A flirty skirt would look wonderful!
I love it with the new coat of paint. I definitely think it needs a slipcover.
I've just been gifted an oak china cabinet - the first thing I'm going to do with it is buy some chalk paint, and paint it white, and I've never used chalk paint, either!
definitely more cottage! add a pretty little slipcover and you are screaming cottage!! Way to go!
Definitely cottage! I'm having the same thots about my chairs. I love the idea of taking it all the way with the ruffled seats!
I like it better too and I have a whole house full that need to be "redone". I agree - redo the seat too.
I am a refinishing person too, but your chairs look amazing painted - so cute, and very, very cottage.
says Cottage white to me and it looks great~!
It is indeed cottage, Sherry!

Love it and the seats are perfect too.
I'm totally in love with cottage style right now and this is PERFECTION!!
It sure is!!!!
It is very hard for me to paint perfectly good furniture, too. But I love your "new" cottage white chairs!
I love it a million times more! You go girl with that slipcover and it will be awesome!
Hugs,
Judy
Definitely cottage and definitely much better! Did you have to sand and prime the chairs first?
LUV LUV LUV, Sherry! Truly and totally cottage!!!!! :) Ticking would be pretty as a seat cover....!

I didn't sand or paint. I just dusted. I am almost ready to wax and distress. It is really hard for me to paint furniture!! Really hard, but this is such a classic look I feel good about it! Thanks for all of the positive comments!

I'm from the old country like you and would have never thought of painting an antique. Boy have times changed. Now I would do it in a heart beat. I LOVE your chair in white. And you took the plunge and did chalk paint. I have got to try that stuff. I have heard over and over that its the greatest thing since sliced bread. It sure looks great on your chair.
The chair looks great!...After using Annie Sloan paint, I do not think I could ever use regular paint again...It is so great to work with....Since you gave the chair a beautiful new look, maybe a new fabric may just take it over the top!....The flirty slip cover sounds nice too!
I'm sitting next to you in that very boat, Sherry! I love the cottage look and have for a long time, but I'm always afraid of a coat of paint. After painting some pieces for the daughter's apartment, I want to take the plunge here even more now.
If I can just get the courage to dip the brush and then start.
I really, really LOVE your chair. I even like it with the current cushion.
Sherry It looks great!! I was raised the same way, paint on a Antique or a wood was Tabu! But I did it and used the Anne Sloan Chalk Paint on a Chair for my first project. Now I am doing all the side Tables in my Living room. This Paint is just the easiest I think to use on anything!!

I too grew up with antiques and the word paint was a dirty word....but boy have I changed my mind.
To me the paint softens and gives such warmth to the piece, and to the room that becomes its home.
Your chair looks wonderful with or without a new cover.
Can't wait to see it distressed!!
Definitely cottage! Your chair looks wonderful painted cottage white. I can see it with a burlap or muslin skirted cushion cover.
What a difference! I too have always been afraid to paint antique furniture but now I'm thinking anything under 50 years old gets cottage color. Thanks for taking the plunge and giving me the courage to do it too.
I have furniture I need to paint. I want to do my dining room table. I hate it so dark. Maybe I should take the leap and do it this summer.
I love the difference with the white paint but I think I would have to change the seat cover! Joan
My aunt and uncle think nothing of stripping furniture and restaining it. My mom was the opposite and almost always painted old furniture. I think the white paint is certainly an updated look. Some wood looks good left alone, but I think some oak looks good painted. Your chairs certainly have the cottage feel with the white paint. Keep up the great work Sherry! Thanks for visiting me at Your Cozy Home Party this week!
Totally cottage! Even with those seatcovers! You never know what a great coat of paint can reveal!
Oh, they look good! My mom is wanting to paint her oak dining set, I'll have to show her how yours turned out!
