Cherry Apple Pie

This picture would never make it into a magazine.  The pie crust was so crumbly it fell apart when I cut the slice and lifted to my plate.  But, it was soo good!  I have never made a cherry apple pie before and after I made it I wondered, why not?  Cherries and apples are great together.  I used the frozen dark sweet cherries from Schwan's.  Those were compliments of my Mother.  I believe she was hinting I make a pie.;)

Cherry Apple Pie
Ingredients:
2 cups fresh or frozen dark sweet pitted cherries
1 cup sugar
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
3 cups peeled, cored, and thinly sliced apples
2 tablespoons butter
Ready made pie crust (I always use Pillsbury)
Top with:
1 tablespoon milk
1/2 teaspoon sugar
pinch ground cinnamon

If using frozen cherries, let stand 30 minutes until partially thawed.  Combine in medium bowl sugar, all-purpose flour, , cinnamon, and nutmeg.  In a large bowl combine cherries, apples, and add the sugar mixture.  Toss to coat and transfer to a pastry-lined 9 inch pie plate.  Dot with butter.  Add the top crust.  Seal ad flute the edge and cut slits in top crust.  Brush top with milk and combine the 1/2 teaspoon sugar and the pinch of cinnamon and sprinkle over crust.  Sprinkle the top crust with the cinnamon and sugar mixture.  Cover the edges with foil and bake at 375 degrees for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake 20-25 minutes more or until golden brown and bubbly.   Cool before serving.

  4. Your pie looks so yummy, I love cherries. I have never seen frozen cherries in England, we do have two old cherries trees in the grave yard at the back of the garden, you have to be quick though or the birds will get them.
I am baking today as it is damp outside, gingerbread is in the oven.
