Turkey Food Crafting

Well, like it or not here comes Thanksgiving!  I know it sorta came at light speed this year didn't it?  I have been holding out on you and not showing you where a lot of my energy each week has been going.  I have for the last three years been watching my nieces and nephew for half of the week and I decided it was time to show you a little of what I do with them all of the time.  So the blog is once again morphing around what is going on here at home.  I took the nieces this week and had them make Turkey Apples.  It was an easy really fun project.  If you have a wiggly bunch that will have their own table this year at Thanksgiving, put the supplies out and have them craft these Turkey Apples while you are waiting for all of your guests to arrive.  They will be busy and having fun too and who knows, if their hungry they might eat something healthy too, always a plus.

Ingredients:
Apples (as many as you have children)
5 wooden round toothpicks for each apple
2 candy eyes for each apple
mini marshmallows
raisins
grapes
creamy peanut butter

Assembly:
Give each child an apple, 5 toothpicks, and 2 eyes, and a supply of raisins, marshmallows, and grapes.  Give them an example "feather" by making the first "feather" for one of them.  I used a mini marshmallow, raisin, and grape assortment on mine.  The three year old proudly announced that I was making a pattern.  She is so smart, she figured out we were sneaking math into this activity too!  Show the children how to place the "feathers" into their turkey.  I just let them build their turkeys and then I checked back with them and brought my jar of peanut butter and used it to apply the candy eyes.  I applied those right above the stem to make the apple look like it had a face.  The candy eyes were made by Wilton.
This activity works well with children from 2 on up.  Even my 9 year old liked his Turkey Apple.

If you have children at your home over the holidays and you want to impress them further with your prowess in the kitchen.  This sandwich brought some smiles to a few faces and my 19 year old did not complain when he ate all of his!

Ingredients:
6 baby carrots
2 slices of bread per sandwich
2 raisins per sandwich
1 cashew per sandwich
1 slice of celery per sandwich

Cut the sandwich bread with a bread knife to the turkey body shape.  Spread the pimento cheese on the bread and add the veggies around turkey as in picture above.  Place raisins and cashew on bread for face and serve.

Pimento Cheese Sandwich Spread
3 ounces cream cheese, softened
1 cup grated sharp cheddar cheese
1 cup grated Monterey Jack cheese
1/2 cup mayo
cracked  black pepper to taste
1/4 teaspoon Lawry's Seasoned Salt
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 of a 4-ounce jar of pimentos

I just dump all ingredients into a medium sized storage bowl with lid and mix right in the bowl.  Make the sandwiches you need to make and put the lid on it and store in refrigerator.
