I have a special love for blackberries. I used to walk down the lane on the farm I grew up on and they were growing in wild brambles along the fence. There they dangled so begging me to pick them and take them home. I would step into the ditch and not hesitate to pick a bowlful even though I would come out scratched up by their thorns.
Today, thanks to my Grandfather, I have a nice variety of thornless blackberry that we have been enjoying.
Here are the same blackberries trained on a wire trellis we had on the garden shed. We had to move that shed, so we had to remove the canes and move them. It has been like starting all over but, trellising as you can see, will give you the highest yield with the blackberry.
So, for the treat to go with tea today it was Blackberry Cobbler.
I'll share the recipe tomorrow.
I'll share the recipe tomorrow.
My mug was perfect for this time of year also, because the roses are in full bloom. The mug was made by Roy Kirkham and the pattern is Redoute Roses.
My roses today are Abraham Darby roses by David Austin. The roses bloom and fade in just a day due to the heat. Their smell is amazing and they are so loaded with petals they spill about everywhere.
I took this picture in front of my little backdoor herb garden. We removed all the trees in our yard (they were all diseased) this year and I have so much sun all of the plants are exploding with blooms and producing more fruit than they have in years.
We are are pretty practical gardeners. We are planting berries and really only investing in plants that produce food. Except for my roses, hydrangea, and I am sure I will eventually squeeze a peony in somewhere.

Hi Sherry,
ReplyDeleteYou have a lovely crop of blackberries. One of these days when I have some energy back, {after all my company}, I hope to make some blackberry cobbler or perhaps shortcake. Love the Redoute Rose cup. I have two little tea mugs in that same pattern that I have never shared yet. I'll have to do that one of these days. Thanks for joining me for tea today and have a beautiful day, my friend.
Blessings,
Sandi
I love blackberry cobbler. Yours looks delicious and what a beautiful setting with your rose mug and beautiful Austin roses. Happy Tea Day!
ReplyDeleteI have almost the same memories. We lived in the city, but in the summer we would go and stay with my Aunt. She would take us blackberry hunting and we would come back and make a cobbler.
ReplyDeleteA thornless blackberry sounds ideal and you've got quite the crop.
ReplyDeleteYour comment about growing mostly for food intrigued me. Last year when I wanted to plant my first crop of garlic there was no room in the sun so I took out a clump of Daylilies and next year something else might be removed to grow tomatoes.
I love blackberries, and can't imagine anything better than growing your own!
ReplyDeleteI love blackberries too... I still need to wait for a week or two for them to be ripe here, though... But you made my mouth water in anicipation!
ReplyDeleteLove blackberries.... my husband often has snacks of them from the bushes at the top of our (while he is out mowing.)
ReplyDeleteYum, it is breakfast time here, and that cobbler looks delicious! You have a lovely garden! Love the rocker tucked into it!I also have an herb garden and some veggies. Not many this year for some reason, but the herbs are plentiful.
ReplyDeleteI have pleasant memories of picking blackberries as a child. Love that you have managed to get control of the bush.

Oh how wonderful to have your own berries! Delicious!
ReplyDeleteHi Sherry,
ReplyDeleteI have never eaten blackberries, unless they've been hidden in various pies or cobblers unbeknownst to me! Unfortunately, we don't get blueberries or raspberries here on the island, either, which I adore. Our strawberry season is quite short, so when we do have them, I go a little overboard using them to make Victoria Sponges, pies, and in crepes!
Your garden is beautiful! My husband agrees with you: he'd rather just grow edible plants!
Thanks for sharing your recipe, too, which looks and sounds divine!
Happy Thursday!
Poppy
oh, those blackberries look delicious! How nice you have bushes of them! The roses are so pretty too. A beautiful summer post.
ReplyDeleteMy mouth is watering - what a yummy looking treat!
ReplyDeleteYour garden is absolutely beautiful. I hope to one day have the space to grow delicious and delicate things like yours. I hope the cobbler was yummy :)
ReplyDeleteG'day Sherry! lovely garden! We have some thornless blackberries too but have a zillion squirrels so no harvest as yet. Enjoy your weekend!
ReplyDeleteYour blackberries look fabulous and delicious Sherry! The trellising of the berries is such a great idea. And no thorns! how awesome is that?
ReplyDeleteHope you've had a great summer!!
Blessings & hugs, Edie Marie
das sieht soooo lecker aus und sie haben den tisch so liebevoll gedeckt!!! alles liebe von angie
ReplyDeleteSherry, I love Blackberries! We have cleared some grass up on the hill with plans of building a garden shed. I would love to have some trellising off of it. Are they hard to grow that way? Do you have to put string or wire to get them to grow up? Your cobbler looks delicious and your roses are gorgeous! Thanks for sharing with SYC.
ReplyDeletehugs,
Jann
My blackberries need a bit of control so they produce more...and a bit of bird netting so we get some too. Your garden, and yummy dessert are making me want more!
