Easy Summer Table Runner

Making this table runner is an easy way to update you summer dining area.  I was really pleased with this ticking stripe I received from Wholeport.  This fabric is canvas made with a tropical stripe that wakes my dining room with fresh colors for an updated look.  This fabric is 59 inches wide.  It was so generous in size I had enough to make another table runner for my buffet.

Supplies:
Fabric of choice
scissors
tape measure
large cutting surface
thread
sewing machine
dressmakers chalk
yardstick

To begin this project I laid my fabric out straight on a large cutting surface. I measured my tabletop and added 6 inches longer than that so it would have a 5 inch overhang on each end.

Cutting the table runner down the length is easy with this print you just follow the stripe that gives you the width you desire.

When you get it the length you want mark the length with dressmakers chalk.  I used a yardstick to make a straight line to cut by.

To finish the edges you can sew the edges with a finishing stitch.  I have used my serger machine to create a finish to the raw edge of the fabric.  Then turn the finished edge over twice and sew flat with a straight stitch to create the final edge to the table runner.  Sew all four sides of the table runner this way.

That is all there is to it.  Here is the table runner on my dining table and buffet.  The color and pattern on the canvas give a modern tropical look to my farmhouse dining room.

Thank to Wholeport for sponsoring this summer project!

  4. Very cool and summery looking with those citrus hues. I've been looking for fabric to punch up my dining room with a new table runner, but haven't found what I'm looking for yet. I'd love to have a serger for a professional looking finish like yours! Nicely done, Sherry!

  5. So glad you linked up with Inspired Sunday. This is so fresh and pretty, and who doesn't love easy? Sometimes I get very lazy (or pressed for time, really) and I just tuck under the edges and hope no one notices! Love what you've done.
