Welcome to Home Sweet Home! Today I am sharing a thrifty find. I am giggling as I type, because this was one of those thrift store finds I thought had slipped away. Three months ago I saw this set of transferware with this ship on it at the thrift store. I loved it but, at $65 I passed it up and considered it gone. I knew someone would love it as much as me and it would be sold.
Here is a tablescape by Victoria magazine (July/August 2011) with the transferware.
So, I visited the thrift store a week ago and there was no tag on it. They said they would get the price and call me. I couldn't stand it any longer and went into the store this Tuesday and the owner said they would take $30 for a full 8 piece place setting (47 pieces in all). It was in near mint condition, just a little crazing on the back of one plate. It list on Replacements Ltd. for $369.95. It came home with me for an early birthday present. I have a weakness for coastal anything, not to mention transferware with a ship on it. It is so pretty every piece has a different scene on it. I am not showing it all on purpose, wanting to photograph it in several post. My rule on thrift stores is usually only if you need it and it is under $5. If your heart desires it greatly and it is over $5 wait it out and see if it goes on clearance. Then get the lowest price you can wait for. Usually I have forgotten I want it when it is marked down. If I am still thinking about it and it goes on clearance then I must need to get it. Ha!

I am glad to say 98% of my thrift finds fit within your under $5 guidelines. And anything over $20 I am sure to have a coupon for at least 25% off. There have been a few minor worries over things let slip, but never huge regrets.
ReplyDeleteSeeing your dishes in Victoria was a MAJOR sign that you needed to go back for them. Having them be available was a sure sign they were yours.
I am so glad you got that set. It's truly beautiful and a great price.
ReplyDeleteThank you for hosting the party.
Sherry- I think you got a bargain on your set of china. It's so unique- I've never seen that theme before. Thanks for hosting again this week. I love seeing everyone's things and being inspired by them.

Rhonda
What a score! I love that pattern. I only have two plates and have them on a wall but would love to have the set. I have to tell you I paid nearly as much for two as you did the whole set. I would have jumped on that, you were brave to wait for them to go on sale.
ReplyDeleteI am soooo jealous. Those dishes are awesome and such a bargain. Can't wait to see how you use them. Hugs, Ginger

Unbelievably good luck -- it was meant to be!
ReplyDeleteHi Sherry,
ReplyDeleteGreat deal! I have always liked this pattern, but it's almost always passed right over. I think the key is displaying it with other objects and colors. I also did a tablescape last year with Fair Winds. It's here: http://nancysdailydish.blogspot.com/2010/06/transferware-set-to-beach-table-and.html
I just love Victorias version too! Thanks for sharing.
And...thank you so much for featuring my Paul Revere tablescape. What a pleasant surprise! I'm so flattered. ;-)
Have a lovely weekend and have fun with your new dishes! They were meant for you! I love great deals!

Sherry, I'm still in awe of the great deal you found in the thrift store set. I know you must have rushed over to the store after seeing the tablescape in Victoria, I sure would have. Husband would have heard tires screeching in the drive. Great features from last week, always such great inspiration. As always, thanks for hosting....
